Job Description (Detailed)

Draftsperson – Houses: Candidate will be responsible for providing design/drafting services to the various Project Managers in our office. Much of the work is “task” oriented, however an individual that demonstrates keen interest and ability has full potential to grow from within our firm.

The Candidate must have directly relevant CAD skills including both AutoCAD and Revit, and as part of our interview process, you will be asked to perform a test to demonstrate your ability. If you do not truly have experience preparing drawings in AutoCAD and Revit, please do not apply.

The ideal candidate already has 1-3 years of directly relevant experience and is a self starter – much of your work will be carried out independently, under the direction of a Project Manager, preparing Architectural and Structural Drawings that form part of the deliverables to our clients.

Our projects are varied and extensive – they typically involve additions/renovations to existing homes and the design of completely new infill homes. Projects can be as simple as a new laneway garage, to a very complex modern home that requires Zoning Variances and protracted approvals from Conservation Authorities and Heritage Committees.

Most of our architectural projects require the involvement of our Structural Engineering department since they usually involve significant structural alterations to the building. Hence, the candidate should already be reasonably familiar with home construction and renovation and must have a good understanding of how houses are built in Canada – this includes an understanding of wood frame construction, some understanding of home heating systems, and an appreciation of the importance of proper building envelope design. Over time, the candidate is expected to come to understand the entire life-cycle of our work – from conceptual design all the way through to construction site visits.

The Candidate must be confident, skilled in their abilities, and truly dedicated while working in the office; they must possess good client and customer service skills.

Ideally, the candidate has a general working knowledge of Part 9 of the OBC and should be able to look up relevant Building Code requirements as needed without direction from Project Managers.

Particular preference will be given to applicants that have a BCIN# and have passed examinations that cover Part 9 – House.

If you are a Technologist who is looking to work for a firm that specializes in Houses and Small Buildings, then we are likely the firm for you. We offer a very flexible work environment, benefits, and above-average annual bonus (based upon year end profitability). Our office is a professional, yet casual office environment, where people are expected to assume responsibility and complete their work with high technical quality in a timely manner, with minimal direct supervision.

Summary of Job Requirements:

  1. Demonstrated ability to prepare drawings with AutoCAD and Revit is required.
  2. Must have a good understanding of wood framing typically used in North American home design and construction.
  3. Keen interest in North American house design and construction.
  4. Reasonable ability to use Part 9 of the OBC when preparing design drawings.
  5. Good ability to grasp building details – 3-D spatial visualisation skills are required.
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills – Many of our Clients are Homeowners and Building Renovators, so often we need to explain technical things to non-technical people in a manner whereby the client understands the issues.
  7. We are Design Consultants, so all staff must have very good oral and written English language skills, since direct client contact is expected, and some report writing is also required.
  8. Ideally, candidate has a G driver’s licence since occasional travel to and from Project sites in the Greater Toronto Area is required.
