Intermediate/Senior Engineering/Architectural Technologist – Houses

K H Davis Engineering Consultants is a firm of Structural Engineers and Architectural Technologists, and we are looking for an enthusiastic, Intermediate or Senior Level Architectural or Engineering Technologist with 5-10 years of experience who can bring significant home design and home renovation experience to our busy design firm.

The candidate must have a degree or diploma in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Technology from a College or University, and have a true interest and demonstrated proficiency in the design and construction of houses and small buildings that fall under Part 9 of the Ontario Building Code.

The successful candidate would work under the supervision of one of our Licensed in-house Engineers or Architects (who take ultimate responsibility for design delivery to our clients).

Please note that this is NOT an entry level position, and the candidate is expected to possess significant previous work experience directly related to wood frame Houses and Small Building Projects in the Toronto Construction market. A very good familiarity with house design, permit submission processes, zoning review, and project approval is expected.

We are Design Consultants, and our clients expect us to be experts in our field. While in-house peer review and technical assistance/support is always available to support intermediate level staff, the new candidate is expected to be able to truly contribute and enhance our ability to deliver project to our clients.

We have a well-established reputation amongst Toronto Architects and Builders as specialists in Houses. We are truly dedicated and focused on the design and construction of houses; our staff have appeared on numerous HGTV home improvement shows over the past 20 years which demonstrates our commitment and expertise in the design community. We also regularly contribute to the AEC community by speaking at Trade Shows and related Trade Organizations in the Toronto Area.

Job Description

Engineering/Architectural Technologist – Houses: Candidate will be responsible for providing design services for a wide range of house design/renovation projects. Depending upon ability, candidate may act as Project Manager on individual home design projects that are being done for our Clients. Full responsibility for the project, from design concept to completion, including Client liaison, is expected. This is not an entry level position.

The candidate must have at least 5-10 years of directly relevant experience and is a self starter. Most project in our office are done on a 1-project – 1-person basis; this means that the design of your projects is done mostly by yourself directly, hence much of your work is carried out quite independently, with senior staff providing you with technical and process related support on an as-needed basis. Those that are up to the task can quickly develop into a Project Manager, assuming all the responsibilities that go along with managing and executing house design projects from start to finish.

Our projects are varied and extensive – In 2021 we completed over 500 consulting assignments that typically involve additions/renovations to existing homes and the design of completely new infill homes. Projects can be as simple as a new laneway house, to a very complex modern home that requires Zoning Variances and protracted approvals from Conservation Authorities and Heritage Committees.

Most of our architectural projects require the involvement of our Structural Engineering staff since they usually involve significant structural alterations to the building. Hence, this position is for an individual who is already familiar with home construction and renovations and must understand very well North American style wood frame construction – with some understanding of home heating systems, and an appreciation of the importance of proper building envelope design. A very clear understanding of the role of Municipal Zoning by-laws and Conservation Authorities in the overall building design development process is also required.

Candidate must be confident and skilled in their abilities; the ideal candidate should possess very strong client and customer service skills as well as very good design and CAD skills such as AutoCAD and Revit, and experience preparing drawings for Municipal Zoning applications and for Building Permit Application and approval. Hence, a very good working knowledge of Part 9 of the OBC is expected. Preference will be given to applicants that have a BCIN# and have passed examinations that cover Part 9 – House.

Summary of Job Requirements:

Extensive house design experience is a must, very good understanding of how houses are built in North America (wood frame with siding or brick veneer). Good 3-D spatial visualisation skills are essential.

Excellent interpersonal skills – Most of our clients are homeowners, so often we need to explain technical things to non-technical people in a manner whereby the client understands the issues.

Must have very good English language and good written English skills since direct client contact and proposal/report writing is required. This job cannot be done my someone who does not have high proficiency in the English language since very significant client-facing interaction is required.

Candidate will be expected to attend construction sites to review and solve problems from time-to-time.

It is expected that you have a good working knowledge of MS Office, and commonly used design software such as AutoCAD and REVIT. Ideally, you have a G driver’s licence for this position as well, since you must carry out site visits to locations all around the GTA.

Salary: $75,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
